Tussar Karvati Saree is a craft of the Vidarbha region. “Karvat” in Marathi is the saw, and since the designs look like saw tooth, the fabric is known as Karvati or Karvat-kathi.
Karvati Saree is woven with desi tussar silk both in the warp and weft in the body portion, and 2/80 mercerized cotton is introduced for the border. The speciality of the Vidarbha Tussar Karvathi Saree is three-shuttle weaving (tapestry type of weaving).
The uniqueness of this Tussar Karvati Saree is that its body is in natural colour and the border is red/maroon colour with 2 to 3 sharp white lines about 8 to 12 dent another colour (green) patta, in which border weft and body weft yarn are interlocked and making Karvati design on a green ground, gomi, ruifool and other traditional designs are taken for extra warp in white colour.
