The Warmth of Earth, The Precision of Craft

Rust red is a colour that has aged well across centuries of Indian textile tradition. It carries within it the warmth of ochre, the depth of terracotta, and a certain timelessness that sits comfortably in both traditional and contemporary wardrobes. When that ground is covered from edge to edge with fine ikat arrow motifs in grey and white, rendered by a weaver who has spent years mastering the Sambalpuri technique, the result is a fabric of quiet but unmistakable distinction.

About the Craft

The single ikat tradition of Sambalpuri weaving from western Odisha is a craft that demands precision long before the loom is even set up. In this technique, either the warp or the weft threads are stretched out, measured, and bound in calculated sections before being immersed in dye. The bound areas resist the colour and emerge as the pattern; the rest takes the dye and becomes the ground. Once the threads are dried and the bindings removed, the weaver winds them onto the loom and begins the careful work of alignment — ensuring that the pre-dyed motifs fall into place correctly with every pass of the shuttle. A fabric covered as uniformly and densely as this one with repeating ikat motifs requires the entire width of the warp to be dyed and aligned in perfect sequence, which speaks to the considerable experience of the artisan behind it.

The Speciality of This Fabric

What distinguishes this piece is the density and consistency of its patterning. The arrow motifs cover virtually the entire surface of the cloth — there is no plain ground visible between them — and yet the fabric never feels heavy or cluttered. The grey and white of the motifs sit lightly against the rust red, and the slight organic variation in each arrow, a natural consequence of the hand-dyeing process, gives the surface a liveliness that a printed repeat simply cannot replicate. As a shirt, this fabric makes a strong but measured impression — the all-over pattern commands attention while the muted colour palette keeps everything well within the bounds of elegance.

How to Care?

Hand wash in cold water with a gentle, colour-safe detergent. If machine washing is necessary, select the delicate cycle only. Avoid soaking for extended periods and refrain from wringing or twisting the cloth. Dry in the shade to protect the warmth of the rust tone and maintain the crispness of the white detailing. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp for a smooth, well-finished result.

A Note Before You Order

Fabrics are cut and supplied strictly as per the order quantity, and returns or exchanges cannot be accepted once the fabric has been cut and the order dispatched. Colours on screen may vary slightly from the actual piece. Minor irregularities in the weave are a natural and valued quality of handloom cloth — each length carries the individuality of the hand that made it.

A Cloth That Earns Its Place

Rust red and grey is not a combination that shouts. It earns its place in a wardrobe through character — through the warmth of the colour, the precision of the ikat work, and the knowledge that every arrow on this fabric was placed there by a weaver in Odisha who understood exactly what they were doing. That is worth something, and it shows every time you wear it.

  • Handwoven on a traditional pit loom by skilled artisans from the Sambalpuri weaving community of Odisha.
  • Single ikat technique with resist-dyed warp or weft threads, producing the characteristic soft, feathered edges of genuine ikat patterning.
  • Fabric: 100 count pure cotton — fine, breathable, and suited to year-round wear in the Indian climate.
  • Each piece measures 2.5 metres in length and 1.1 metres in width — sufficient for a complete shirt.
  • Warm rust red ground with a dense all-over pattern of elongated ikat arrow motifs in dark grey and white, running in continuous vertical columns across the full width of the cloth, with small scattered white ikat dot detailing filling the space between columns.
  • Slight colour variation from the product image and minor weave irregularities are natural to handloom fabric and are part of its intrinsic character.
