A Fabric That Moves With You

Not every fabric needs to be structured or sombre to be taken seriously. This pink and navy Sambalpuri shirt material makes its case through energy — a surface alive with vertical ikat stripes that seem to ripple when the cloth moves, in a palette that is warm and spirited without tipping into the showy. It is the kind of fabric that lifts a wardrobe in the way only a handmade thing can, quietly and without fuss.

About the Craft

Sambalpuri ikat weaving is one of western Odisha's most enduring contributions to India's handloom heritage. The single ikat process that produces a fabric like this one begins at the dyeing stage, long before the loom is touched. Sections of the warp or weft threads are bound tightly with resist material and submerged in dye. When the bindings are removed, the thread carries the pattern within it — a ghost of the final design, waiting for the weaver to bring it to life. On the loom, these pre-dyed threads must be aligned with great care so that the motifs emerge cleanly and consistently across the full width of the cloth. It is patient, skilled work, and in a fabric with dense vertical striping like this one, that patience is visible in every column.

The Speciality of This Fabric

What gives this fabric its particular appeal is the way the colours interact within the striped pattern. The ikat chevrons and arrow motifs are not rendered in a single flat colour — they shift between red, deep pink, navy, and lavender as the columns repeat across the cloth, so the overall effect is one of depth and movement rather than simple striping. The light pink and white ground keeps the fabric from feeling heavy, and the result is something that reads as both lively and refined. As a shirt, it works particularly well in relaxed or semi-formal settings, and pairs naturally with both light and dark bottoms.

How to Care?

Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Machine washing on a gentle or delicate cycle is acceptable if necessary. Avoid prolonged soaking and do not wring the fabric. Dry in shade to preserve the softness of the pink tones and prevent the navy from bleeding. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp for the best finish.

A Note Before You Order

Fabrics are cut and supplied strictly as per the order quantity, and returns or exchanges cannot be accepted once the fabric has been cut. Colours may appear slightly different on screen than in person. Minor irregularities in the weave are natural to handloom cloth and are what distinguish it from anything made by a machine.

Made by Hand, Worn With Meaning

Every vertical stripe on this fabric was placed there by a weaver working thread by thread on a traditional pit loom in Odisha. That kind of making takes time and skill, and the cloth that results from it carries a quality — in texture, in character, in the way it ages — that mass production simply cannot match.

  • Handwoven on a traditional pit loom by artisans from the Sambalpuri weaving community of Odisha.
  • Single ikat technique with resist-dyed threads, producing the soft, slightly blurred edges that are the mark of genuine ikat.
  • Fabric: 100 count pure cotton — light, fine, and comfortable to wear in the Indian climate through the year.
  • Each piece measures 2.5 metres in length and 1.1 metres in width — sufficient for a complete shirt.
  • Light pink and white ground with dense vertical columns of ikat arrow and chevron motifs rendered in shades of red, deep pink, navy blue, and lavender, creating a richly layered stripe effect across the full width of the cloth.
  • Natural colour variation from the product image and minor weave irregularities are expected characteristics of genuine handloom fabric.
