Richness in Every Thread

There are fabrics that take time to fully appreciate, and this is very much one of them. A first glance registers the warm brown and deep maroon tones, the vertical striping, the general sense of pattern. A second look begins to pick apart the layers — the fine ikat floral and leaf motifs, the scattered dot detailing, the thin mustard accent stripes, the variety of motif forms shifting from column to column. By the third look, it is clear that this is a fabric of exceptional complexity, made by hands that knew exactly what they were doing at every stage of the process.

About the Craft

Single ikat weaving from the Sambalpuri tradition of western Odisha is a process that begins with the yarn, not the loom. Threads are measured and laid out, then bound at precise intervals before being dyed. The bound sections resist the dye and become the motif; the rest takes the colour and becomes the ground. In single ikat, this is done to either the warp or the weft, and the weaver must then align these pre-patterned threads carefully on the loom so that the design emerges correctly in the finished cloth. A fabric as densely patterned as this one — with multiple distinct motif types running in parallel bands across the full width — requires the artisan to manage a complex dyeing sequence and execute a correspondingly careful setup on the loom. It is work that draws on years of experience and a deep familiarity with how dyed thread behaves once it is under tension.

The Speciality of This Fabric

The colour palette on this fabric is one of its most considered qualities. Brown and maroon together create a ground that is warm and autumnal, the kind of tonal combination that feels rich without relying on brightness. Against that depth, the white ikat motifs — florals, leaves, ovals, scattered dots — appear with a clarity that is all the more striking for the contrast. The mustard accent stripe running between each band adds a thin line of warmth that ties the whole composition together without drawing attention away from the main patterning. As a shirt, this fabric works beautifully at festive occasions and formal gatherings, but it is considered enough in its tones to carry into professional settings as well.

How to Care?

Hand wash in cold water with a mild, colour-safe detergent. If machine washing is required, use the gentle or delicate cycle only. Avoid soaking for extended periods and do not wring or twist the cloth. Dry in shade to protect the depth of both the brown and the maroon tones. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp for a neat, well-pressed finish.

A Note Before You Order

Fabrics are cut and supplied strictly as per the order quantity, and returns or exchanges cannot be accepted once the fabric has been cut and the order dispatched. Colours on screen may differ slightly from the actual piece. Minor irregularities in the weave are a natural and expected quality of genuine handloom cloth — each length is one of a kind, and that is precisely as it should be.

Detail That Lasts a Lifetime

A fabric this carefully made does not date. The motifs are rooted in a weaving vocabulary that has served Odisha's handloom tradition for generations, the cotton is built to wear and wash well, and the colour combination is one that only improves with time. This is the kind of shirt material you buy once and return to again and again, each time noticing something in it you had not quite seen before.

  • Handwoven on a traditional pit loom by experienced artisans from the Sambalpuri weaving community of Odisha.
  • Single ikat technique with resist-dyed threads, giving all motifs their characteristic feathered, organic edges.
  • Fabric: 100 count pure cotton — fine, lightweight, and comfortable to wear across all seasons.
  • Each piece measures 2.5 metres in length and 1.1 metres in width — sufficient for a complete shirt.
  • Rich brown and deep maroon ground with alternating vertical bands of white ikat floral and leaf motifs, scattered oval and dot ikat fills, fine white pin-stripe ikat detailing, and narrow mustard accent stripes running the full length of the cloth.
  • Natural colour variation from the product image and minor weave irregularities are inherent to handloom fabric and are what make every piece individual.
