Maroon and green is a pairing that carries the weight of the natural world — the depth of aged timber, the richness of forest canopy, the colour of festivals celebrated under open skies. In this Handwoven Single Ikat Sambalpuri Cotton Saree, these two colours find each other with the ease of old acquaintances. The deep maroon body, handwoven with a fine ikat texture, is framed by a dark green border alive with traditional floral ikat motifs, and the drape concludes with a black pallu of remarkable craftsmanship — where peacock forms in red, pink, and green emerge from the dark ground with the characteristic softness and depth that only single ikat weaving can produce. This is a saree that carries its culture openly and its beauty quietly.

About the Craft

In the Sambalpur region of western Odisha, the art of single ikat weaving has been preserved across generations not through institutional effort but through family knowledge — passed from weaver to weaver, loom to loom, in an unbroken chain of practice. The technique demands that all pattern-making be done before the actual weaving begins. Yarn is stretched, tied at precisely measured intervals, and immersed in dye baths where the tied sections resist the colour and the untied portions absorb it fully. This process may be repeated multiple times for multicolour designs, with each colour requiring its own round of tying and dyeing. For a pallu featuring the peacock — one of the most complex and revered motifs in the Sambalpuri design vocabulary — this preparatory work demands a level of skill and foresight that only the most experienced weavers possess. The finished result, with its distinctive ikat softness of edge and depth of colour, is something that no printing technique can replicate.

Speciality

The black ground of the pallu in this saree is a particularly considered design choice. Against black, the red and pink peacock motifs and the green floral forms glow with an intensity that a lighter ground simply could not achieve. The contrast is dramatic but not harsh — the ikat softness of the motif edges gives the entire pallu a warmth and painterly quality that draws the eye and holds it. The green border, running the full length of the saree, picks up the green of the pallu motifs and creates a visual continuity that ties the whole drape together with great elegance. The maroon body, with its subtle ikat surface, provides the perfect understated foundation for this richness of border and pallu.

How to Care?

  • Handwash gently in cold water using a mild detergent
  • Dry cleaning is suggested for best results
  • Do not squeeze or wring the fabric
  • Dry flat on a clean horizontal surface in a shaded area, away from direct sunlight
  • Store in a clean, dry place away from insects, excessive moisture, dust, and prolonged light exposure

The peacock has long been the crown jewel of Sambalpuri ikat design — a motif that tests the weaver's skill, rewards the wearer's eye, and carries within it the full cultural pride of Odia handloom tradition. In this maroon and green saree, with its black peacock pallu, that tradition is expressed at its very finest. This is a saree to be worn at life's most meaningful moments — and to be kept, long after those moments have passed, as a reminder of what beauty made by hand truly feels like.
