Three materials that have no business looking this good together, and yet

Deep navy Monalisa stone at the top. A scrolled gold frame in the middle, with three small pearls placed like punctuation along its curves. And at the base, a natural mother-of-pearl drop—organic, irregular, with that particular luminescence that no synthetic material has ever successfully copied. On paper, this combination sounds like it should be busy. On the ear, it is anything but. These earrings are the kind of piece that photographs beautifully and looks even better in person, because the iridescence of the shell and the depth of the Monalisa stone are things that a screen can only approximate.

They were made by hand in West Bengal by a jewellery artisan working in the brass craft tradition that the state has refined over generations. At 18 grams per pair, they are substantial enough to feel like real jewellery and light enough to wear through a full day without discomfort. That balance is harder to achieve than it sounds.

About the craft

Brass jewellery making in West Bengal sits at the intersection of traditional metalwork and contemporary jewellery design, and the artisans who practice it bring to the work both an inherited understanding of the metal and an eye trained on modern aesthetics. Brass—an alloy of copper and zinc—is the material of choice for this kind of handcrafted jewellery because it is workable enough to be shaped into fine scrollwork and wire forms, sturdy enough to hold stones and drops securely, and takes gold plating exceptionally well.

The making of a pair like this begins with the brass frame. The scrolled central section—the ornamental filigree-like structure that connects the stud top to the circular drop frame—is shaped by hand, the wire bent and formed into the curling, symmetrical design that gives the earring its distinctive waist. This kind of wire shaping requires patience and a steady hand: the curves must be even and the proportions consistent across both pieces of the pair. The circular frame at the base, which holds the Mother of Pearl drop, is formed separately and soldered in place.

Once the brass structure is complete, the stones are set. The Monalisa stone—a deep, opaque navy cabochon with a smooth, polished surface—is bezel-set into the stud top, its colour providing the dark anchor from which the rest of the earring descends. The freshwater pearls are set along the frame at three points, their matte-white softness contrasting with both the warm gold of the brass and the iridescent shimmer of the Mother of Pearl drop below. The shell drop itself is selected for its natural shape and iridescence, then set within the circular brass frame in a way that allows its organic form to sit slightly off-center—natural rather than engineered in appearance.

The finished brass structure is then plated in 18K gold, a process that gives the earrings their warm, consistent gold tone and protects the brass surface beneath.

What makes these earrings worth wearing?

Statement earrings that are genuinely versatile are rare. Most lean so far into one aesthetic—heavily ethnic or aggressively contemporary—that their occasions become limited. These earrings are designed with the kind of material restraint that prevents that problem. The gold frame reads as contemporary. The Monalisa stone and pearls read as classic. The Mother of Pearl shell reads as organic and artisanal. Together they produce something that works with a silk saree at a wedding, with a linen kurta at a festive lunch, and with a clean western outfit at an evening occasion—without the earring looking out of place at any of them.

The iridescence of the Mother of Pearl is worth particular mention. It shifts with light and angle in a way that no dyed or synthetic material manages, and it gives the earring a quiet dynamism—they look slightly different in indoor light than they do in natural light, and that variability makes them interesting to wear rather than simply pretty to own.

How to care?

  • Keep away from water, perfume and harsh chemicals—these will accelerate the wear of the gold plating
  • Remove before bathing, swimming or applying skincare and fragrance
  • Avoid prolonged contact with sweat, which can dull the plating over time
  • After each wear, wipe gently with a soft dry cloth to remove any surface residue or moisture
  • Store in an airtight box or soft fabric pouch when not in use—this prevents oxidation and protects the shell and pearls from knocks
  • Do not clean with abrasive materials or chemical jewellery cleaners, which can scratch the stone and damage the mother-of-pearl.

Good jewellery earns its place in a collection not by being loud but by being right—the right materials, the right proportions, the right occasion range. These earrings satisfy all three. The craft is visible in the scrollwork and the stone settings. The materials—shell, pearl, stone, and gold-plated brass—are honest and well-chosen. And the overall design has the kind of balance that means they will look as relevant in five years as they do today. That is what makes a piece worth buying rather than simply admiring.
