About the Craft
Kondapalli toy making is a heritage craft protected under the Geographical Indications Act of 1999. The artisans use Tellaponiki, a special soft wood known for its workability and light weight. Each figure in this Rolu Rokali set is individually carved with remarkable attention to detail. The women's expressive faces, flowing hair, traditional attire and gold ornaments are all meticulously crafted. After carving, the artisans prepare makku, a unique paste made from tamarind seed powder and sawdust, which serves as a natural adhesive to join the separately carved parts. This paste also helps in adding finer details and finishing touches. Once assembled, the toys are painted using vibrant oil colours, water colours or enamel paints. The mortar and pestle are rendered in black, creating a striking contrast against the colourful figures. This entire process requires several days and showcases generations of accumulated skill.
