In the lush, green heartland of Assam, where the Brahmaputra flows wide and unhurried, a weaving tradition as ancient and serene as the river itself continues to thrive. Our Handwoven Eri Mekhela Chador in Cream is a magnificent expression of that tradition — crafted entirely on handlooms by the skilled weavers of Assam using one of the world's most rare, ethical, and beautiful natural fibres: Eri Silk, lovingly known as the silk of Ahimsa.
Eri Silk holds a very special place among India's celebrated silk varieties — and for a deeply meaningful reason. Unlike conventional silk production, Eri silk is obtained without harming the silkworm. The cocoon is allowed to open naturally, letting the moth emerge freely before the fibre is harvested. This compassionate, non-violent process has earned Eri its poetic name — Ahimsa Silk — making it as beautiful in philosophy as it is in feel. Wearing Eri silk is not just a style choice. It is a values choice — a quiet statement of kindness toward all living beings.
The cream colour of this Mekhela Chador is the natural, undyed tone of the Eri silk itself — warm, soft, and luminous with a gentle matte sheen that is entirely distinct from the high gloss of Mulberry or Tasar silk. This natural ivory-cream base provides an elegant, serene canvas for the exquisite woven motifs that adorn the fabric. Scattered across the body of the Chador in even, graceful rows are traditional ethnic motif butis — softly rendered floral and foliate forms in a warm champagne-gold tone that complement the cream ground with understated sophistication. These motifs are woven directly into the fabric on the handloom — not printed, not embroidered, but built thread by thread into the very structure of the cloth.
The border of the Chador features a broader band of continuous traditional Assamese woven design — intricate, rhythmic paisley and floral scrollwork in the same warm gold tone — framing the entire piece with a refined decorative finish. The bottom edge is finished with delicate natural fringe, adding a classic, graceful touch. The Mekhela — the lower wraparound section — carries the same elegant buti motifs and border design, creating a beautifully harmonious two-piece ensemble.
What sets Eri silk apart as a fabric for daily wear is its remarkable comfort. Naturally warm in winter and breathable in summer, Eri silk is one of those rare textiles that genuinely adapts to the body and the season. It is soft against the skin, easy to drape, and wonderfully easy to handle — making this Mekhela Chador as practical as it is beautiful. Whether worn for a casual festive occasion, a cultural programme, a family gathering, or simply as an expression of quiet, confident elegance in everyday life, this cream Eri Mekhela Chador is a wardrobe addition that will be reached for again and again.
A truly meaningful gift for anyone who loves Indian handloom textiles, values ethical fashion, or simply appreciates the quiet beauty of something woven with care and conscience.
Care Instructions
- Dry clean is the most recommended method for preserving the natural Eri silk fibre and the woven motifs over time
- If hand washing, use only cold or lukewarm water with an extremely mild, pH-neutral detergent — never use harsh chemical detergents or bleach
- Do not machine wash — agitation can damage the delicate Eri silk fibres and distort the woven patterns
- Do not soak for extended periods — wash gently and rinse thoroughly
- Do not wring or twist — gently press out excess water by rolling the fabric flat inside a clean dry cotton towel
- Lay flat to dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area — avoid direct sunlight during drying as it can yellow the natural cream tone over time
- Iron on low heat from the reverse side of the fabric — never iron directly on the woven motif surface
- Store folded carefully in a clean, dry muslin cloth in a cool, dry place — avoid plastic bags as silk needs to breathe
- Refold along different lines periodically to prevent permanent crease marks developing on the silk
- An authentic two-piece Mekhela Chador set handwoven on traditional looms by skilled artisans from Assam
