Some garments are made in a hurry, and some are made with time itself woven into every thread. This Handwoven Cotton Stole belongs to the latter kind. Soft, breathable and quietly beautiful, it carries the rhythm of the handloom in every inch of its fabric, making it a piece that feels as good as it looks.

About the Craft

This stole comes from Bhujodi, a small village in Kutch, Gujarat, that has long been home to the Vankar weaving community. Working on traditional 4-shaft pit looms, these artisans transform simple cotton yarn into fabric marked by delicate boota motifs and subtle extra-weft patterns. The little cross-shaped and diamond motifs scattered across the body of the stole, along with the striped border and hand-knotted tassels at the ends, are all created through techniques passed down within families over generations. Nothing here is printed or mechanically stamped, every motif is woven thread by thread, which is why the fabric carries small, honest irregularities that give it character rather than taking away from it.

Speciality

What truly sets this stole apart is its honesty as a fabric. There is no attempt to hide the little slubs and unevenness of the weave, because that is precisely what tells you it was made by human hands and not a machine. The use of Kala Cotton, an indigenous and rain-fed variety, also makes this stole a more sustainable choice, connecting the wearer to a craft that respects both tradition and the environment.

How to Care?

Hand wash gently in cold water using a mild detergent, and avoid wringing the fabric harshly. Dry in shade rather than direct sunlight to preserve the natural tone of the cotton and the colour of the dyes. Iron on a low setting if required, and store the tassel ends carefully to prevent tangling.

This Handwoven Cotton Stole is a gentle reminder that beauty often lies in imperfection and patience. Draped around the shoulders, it carries with it the story of Kutch, the hands of its weavers and a craft tradition that continues to hold its own in a fast changing world.
