The story of Mirzapur's weaving begins with an act of kindness. Centuries ago, a group of Persian master weavers, injured and stranded on the Grand Trunk Road, were taken in by local villagers near the banks of the Ganga. In gratitude, the master weaver shared his craft with his hosts. That single gesture planted the seed of what would become one of India's most celebrated weaving traditions — and this door mat is a direct descendant of that legacy.
About the Craft
Mirzapur's handwoven durries and mats are made on simple horizontal looms using the Panja technique, where a comb-like tool is used to pack the weft threads tightly into place. This weft-faced plain weave produces a firm, dense fabric that holds up beautifully underfoot. The cotton warp provides the structure, while the woollen weft gives the surface its characteristic softness, slight sheen and warmth of colour. Every mat that comes out of this region carries five centuries of accumulated skill.
Speciality
The all-over textured pattern on this mat is not printed or stamped — it is entirely structural, formed by the weave itself. This means the design will not fade or peel with use. It only gets more characterful over time.
How to Care?
Shake out regularly to remove dust. Spot clean with mild soap and cold water. Do not keep rolled or packed for extended periods, as it may affect the weave structure. Air dry in shade.
