The love between Radha and Krishna has inspired poets, musicians, sculptors and painters for centuries. In the hands of a Pattachitra artist from Odisha, that love becomes something extraordinarily precise — rendered in fine lines, natural pigments and a visual language that has remained largely unchanged for over a thousand years. This painting by artist Srikant Kumar Swain is a deeply felt expression of that devotion.
About the Craft
Pattachitra is one of India's oldest surviving painting traditions, practised by hereditary artists called Chitrakars from Odisha. The word itself means cloth picture — patta being cloth and chitra being image. The canvas is prepared by hand, treated with a mixture of chalk and tamarind paste to create a smooth, firm surface. All colours used are natural and organic — lamp black, conch shell white, hingula red and mineral blues — ground and mixed by the artist himself. The brushes, too, are traditionally made from animal hair. Every element of the process, from surface preparation to the final detailing, is done by hand without any mechanical assistance.
Speciality
What sets this particular piece apart is its architectural complexity — the painting is structured like a temple interior, with the divine couple placed at the sanctum centre and subsidiary deities occupying smaller shrines on either side. It is a complete devotional universe compressed into a single frame.
How to Care?
Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture. Handle with clean, dry hands. If framing, use UV-protective glass to preserve the natural pigments over time.
This is not merely wall décor — it is a record of faith, a demonstration of rare skill and a piece of Odisha's living artistic heritage that deserves a permanent place in any home.
