About the Craft
Shri Anchalbhai Bijalani, a Gujarat State Awardee, represents the finest tradition of leather craftsmanship in Kutch. His work combines the age-old techniques of leather treatment with the intricate Jat embroidery that the region is famous for. The Jat community's needlework is characterised by geometric patterns in bold colours, traditionally done on textiles but here beautifully incorporated into leather. Each bag begins with carefully selected animal leather, which is then cut, shaped and meticulously stitched. The embroidered panel, featuring diamond patterns in red, green and blue threads, is painstakingly created before being integrated into the leather body. The entire process can take several days, with every stitch reflecting the artisan's dedication to his craft.
