Long before synthetic materials took over the world of decorative objects, artisans across Rajasthan were turning animal bone into things of quiet beauty. This handcrafted bone-carved knife is a continuation of that tradition — not a functional blade, but a decorative and collectible object that carries the marks of patient, skilled hands in every pierced motif and carved circle.

About the Craft

Bone and horn carving is one of Rajasthan's older craft traditions, practised by communities of hereditary artisans who have refined their technique over generations. The bones used are sourced entirely from animals that have died naturally or been processed for other purposes — no animal is harmed for this craft. Once cleaned and dried, the bone is shaped, smoothed, and then worked with fine drilling and carving tools to create the lattice-like patterns of dots, geometric forms and central medallions seen on this piece. The natural cream-white of the bone requires no paint or finish — its beauty is entirely its own.

Speciality

The pierced jali-work on this piece is done entirely freehand, without stencils or machine guidance. The consistency of the pattern across such a narrow surface speaks to a level of hand control that takes years to develop.

How to Care?

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Avoid prolonged exposure to water or humidity, as it can cause the bone to crack over time. Keep away from direct sunlight to prevent yellowing.

This knife will never cut anything — and that is entirely the point. It exists purely to be looked at, appreciated and passed on as a reminder that craft, at its finest, needs no practical justification.
