Building this design requires several distinct hand embroidery techniques working together. Satin stitch fills the large areas smoothly and evenly. Outline work defines the contours and gives the composition its clarity. And the floral sections — the clusters of petals that sit around the deer — are worked using a punch needle technique that lifts the thread away from the surface, creating a raised, almost sculptural texture that photographs cannot entirely do justice to.
