Chikankari Kurti & Palazzo with Phulkari Dupatta: Two Crafts, One Stunning Combination
Some of the best things in Indian fashion happen when two great traditions meet. This set brings together the quiet, shadow-work elegance of Lucknow's chikankari and the loud, joyful colour of Punjab's phulkari, and somehow, they work together beautifully.
About the Crafts
Chikankari is an embroidery tradition that has been practised in Lucknow for centuries. Worked onto fine fabric with white thread, it creates delicate, almost whisper-like patterns that catch light in the most understated way. Phulkari, which literally means "flower work", comes from the villages of Punjab, where women once stitched these vibrant geometric patterns onto fabric as a labour of love for their families. The two crafts could not be more different in temperament, and yet, paired together, they balance each other perfectly.
What Makes It Special?
The contrast is what makes this set work so well. The white kurti and palazzo, with their soft chikan embroidery, are calm and refined. The phulkari dupatta, with its bursts of yellow, red and green on royal blue, brings the whole outfit alive. Together, they strike a balance between elegant and festive that is quite hard to find.
How to Care?
Wash the kurti and palazzo gently by hand in cold water. The chiffon dupatta should be dry-cleaned or hand-washed with extra care to preserve the embroidery. Do not tumble dry. Iron on low heat.
Because, in a sense, it was. Every stitch in this set was placed by hand, with patience and skill, and that is something no machine can replicate.
